Accident claims: minimising the risk of staged accidents

by Conrad Murray last modified 2006-12-20 10:23

I watched Trevor McDonald Tonight recently and am rather about becoming a victim of a staged accident. How can I minimise my risk? CL. Tuxford, Notts

The roadside lawyer writes:

WITH POLICE claiming recently that as many as 40 gangs may be working in the UK, staged accidents are a very real concern both to the insurance industry and road users who have to pay for it within the cost of their premiums.  Most do not involve innocent drivers but a growing trend is to take the brake lights out of an old banger, fill it with passengers then stop suddenly so that the innocent driver collides with the back of the old banger injuring all the passengers.

The best advice is not to drive too close to other vehicles.  You need to pressure your insurers to investigate the fraud as well as attempting to recover your own losses from the actual insurers of the vehicle concerned or the Motor Insurers Bureau if there is no insurance. A motor insurance check from the accident scene such as is offered with crashguard membership may well assist in preventing fraudulent claims. In any event, it is essential to get legal advice immediately.
