Are the police allowed to change a charge from driving not in accordance with licence to no insurance without informing me or me entering a plea for the offence?

I received a summons for a charge of driving not in accordance with licence and I pleaded guilty by postal form. I have now just received a fine and collection order from the Court stating I have been convicted of driving without insurance and fined £320. There was nothing on the Summons relating to a charge of driving without insurance. I did take out fully comp insurance when I purchased the car, not knowing my licence had expired in 2000 due to a driving ban. How are they allowed to change a charge from driving not in accordance to no insurance without informing me or me entering a plea for the offence?

No, they are not allowed to add another allegation without informing you. You will have had 6-8 points endorsed on your licence too if you have been convicted of no insurance. You need to call the Court and find out what went wrong.

You may need to ask for the case to be re-opened. Come back to me if you want representation and I can help further. I am good at getting cases re-opened and allegations withdrawn.
