Can I claim against a car park for damage or loss if signage says "cars parked at owners' risk"

I have access to parking at work which is a school. The car park is supposed to be secure but the school gate is always open to pedestrians. A couple of weeks ago 2 fellow teachers had their vehicles stolen and property removed. No signs were in place until this morning. These signs now say that contents and vehicles left at owners risk. If my vehicle is damaged or broken into while in the car park have I a legal right to submit a claim to recover damages for repairs and does this also apply to other car parks where this sign appears?

"Vehicles left at owners' risk" signs do not necessarily offer the landowner legal protection should negligence be involved on behalf of the landowner or staff, but if the car park is not promised to be patrolled or secure, your vehicle is at the same risk it might face in the street. Thus were your vehicle damaged or stolen you may be likely to more successfully claim on your insurance as opposed to from the car park owner. If you are promised "secure parking" and the school fails to meet this standard, then you may well have a claim against them.
