Can I drive my wife's car, which is not insured, on my policy?

Is it legal for me to drive a car registered and belonging to my wife but not yet insured at all. The car is off road at present. I wanted to get the car elsewhere. My insurance states I can drive a car not belonging to me, providing I have the owner's permission, but does that car need to be inured by the owner also at the time? My wife's car is taxed and has MOT

The minimum insurance requirement is that the driver must be insured in the vehicle on a third party basis and if your policy includes this clause - and many are now removing it - then you will be able to drive any vehicle on that basis without the vehicle having an insurance policy in its own right provided it is not registered to you.

However while this would be OK for a single journey if it could be shown you were the sole regular driver or had constructively registered it in your wife's name to avoid buying insurance for it then the cover on the car - and possibly on your own vehicle might be deemed void and you would be committing an offence. Please be also aware that the police make wide use of automatic number plate recognition equipment to check for no insurance and these only show the state of insurance on the vehicle and not whether the driver is covered. You are thus strongly recommended to carry a copy of your insurance document and ID or the vehicle may be lifted on suspicion it is uninsured.
