Car came back from vehicle check as a former category C write off but the DVLA have no record of this...
I am looking at buying a car. The HPI check came back as it being recorded as a CAT C write off in 2002. it has also changed owners twice since. That it was written off is not mentioned on the logbook. I contacted the DVLA and they have no record of the vehicle needing or having had a VIC.
That it was a category C write off is purely an economic calculation based on the cost of repairs set against the value of the vehicle. It means that it was not viewed as inherently dangerous and thus if the repairs were satisfactorily carried out there should be no problem. It will have been through MOTs since then which mean it is likely to be OK.
That said get the vehicle checked over carefully and bear in mind that the vehicle was a write off should be reflected in the buying price - as it will certainly be if you ever sell it on.
Category C write offs can represent excellent value if repaired properly and are particularly good value if you plan to keep them for a long time or until they finally go for scrap.
