I was driving my works van and I have just been told that I went through a red traffic light last week which I was unaware of. Can I appeal this and, if so, what should I do now?
Red light cameras are placed at traffic light controlled junctions and photograph vehicles that pass traffic lights set to red.
The camera is triggered from inductive proximity sensors placed within the road surface. The detector triggers when a car passes over the loop - if the traffic light is also set to red, then the camera is triggered to take two photographs one second apart. A data box is included in the photograph to show the date and time of the photographs, the speed of the vehicle as it passed the red light and, if necessary, a road lane identification.
The first picture will be taken at a set interval after the line was crossed, it can only be tripped if the light is on red and has been for a set amount of time.
Both images are likely to show the registration number of the vehicle from behind and usually the red light showing. You need to request the photographs for both the alleged offences which the police will normally supply to you before you decide what to do next. However there is no legal requirement for them to do so.
If you want to send them to us for interpretation then please do so.
