Is there a maximum time between being caught for speeding by a camera and being notified that a prosecution will go ahead?

A Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) will be sent out within 14 days (this can be longer if you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle - they have an indeterminate amount of time to get a NIP to you).

You will usually then be sent a fixed penalty notice (FPN) and this can be dealt with at any stage until 91 days after the date of offence.

If the time runs out for an FPN or the offence is sufficiently serious then you will be summonsed to Court.

A document leading to a summons must be placed with the Court within 6 months of the offence. This does not mean a summons has to be issued within 6 months and certainly not that the Court date needs to be within 6 months but the Court must be instructed that a summons should be issued and the summons should follow shortly after.

In some cases even if a document leading to a summons has been properly placed before the Court within the 6 months period but the summons has not been promptly dispatched we may be able to get the case withdrawn.
