My friend has bought a car which has an MOT and tax but no insurance. Can I drive the car home for him under my insurance which covers me for other cars under a third party policy?

My friend has bought a car which has an MOT and tax and he needs to collect it. At present he doesn't have insurance to drive the car so the car has no insurance on it at all. My insurance policy say I can drive other cars under a third party policy as long as I have the owner's permission and it does not belong to me. Would I be okay to drive the car home for him even though the car itself has no insurance on it?

This kind of cover is designed for occasional use in these circumstances. The car must not be yours and you should carefully check your policy as a number of insurers have been quietly removing this benefit from their policies, but no the vehicle does not have to be insured and you meet the minimum requirements for insurance under the law in being covered on a third party basis.

Some observations:

  • Check your policy first as detailed above
  • Carry the insurance document with you while you drive the car. Many traffic cars carry ANPR equipment and if you get stopped they will want to see some proof that the car is covered in this way - or you risk them lifting it.
  • Do not park the car in the street or any other public place (including car parks or private roads) - not on the journey or when you get it home.
  • Be aware that you are only covered third party. If you have an accident the damage to the car will not be covered.
