Penalty points for motoring offences

by Murdo Maguire last modified 2007-02-05 03:10

What is the charge for failing to stop after an accident and exchange particulars or failing to report an accident to police as soon as reasonably practicable? What is the charge on uninsured drivers? What is the charge for lying to a police officer about the name of the driver who failed to report the accident? What is the charge for driving with a suspended licence?

Offence No: AC10     Failing to stop after an accident     5-10 points
Offence No: AC20     Failing to give particulars or to report an accident within 24 hours     5-10 points
Offence No: BA10     Driving whilst disqualified by order of court     6 points
Offence No: IN10     Using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks.     6-8 points

In all cases there would be substantial fines and depending on the nature of the circumstances the offence may carry a prison term, especially if all the above occurred and particularly if the actions led to injury or death.

Misleading the police could give rise to a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice charge which is imprisonable but does not carry penalty points.
