Reporting minor accidents to the police

by Murdo Maguire last modified 2007-02-05 02:37

My car was park in a marked parking space and was hit by a taxi. No-one was in my car at the time but he left me his insurance details. Do I still need to contact the police?

As there were presumably no injuries, it is very doubtful that the Police would be at all interested and there is no obligation to report it.  The only circumstances in which you could be in difficulties is if you were given completely false information by the other driver and wanted to make an application to the Motor Insurers' Bureau under the Untraced Drivers Agreement.

In this regard you must report the matter to the Police within 5 days of the accident or as soon as possible, so ask your own insurers to check out the taxi drivers details on the Motor Insurers Database.
