The likelihood is you may be fined for failing to drive in accordance with a traffic sign. You may be cautioned if you were stopped at the scene or you could be issued with either a Fixed Penalty Notice [FPN] (by the police or a traffic warden) or a Penalty Charge Notice [PCN] by the council. The Fixed Penalty brings penalty points, the PCN does not but the fine is higher.
However they may choose to let you off with a warning. A FPN would have been given at the scene or within 14 days thereafter served on the keeper through the post, a PCN is normally served within 28 days.
